My Secret Silver Box

Harpo: I think you will appreciate Harpo’s “Secret Silver Box” more if you know a short biography. As well as a singer, Harpo was also a horse trainer. In 1980 he was involved in a horrible accident in which one of his favorite horses, Starter, lashed out and kicked him in the face several times. He lost his sense of smell as a result of his injuries, as well as his sight in one eye. He loved this horse so much he named his next album after the horse Starter.

What do you keep in YOUR secret silver box?

I fell in love with Harpo’s Swedish hit “Moviestar” because it reminds me of one of the things I love so much — Onnie and her Daddy’s love for her too.  I soon found this song also by Harpo. As I listened to it the first time, I found tears rolling down my cheeks. I thought of so many things I love and keep in my Secret Silver Box.

My Secret Silver Box

  • My life with my grandparents who gave me so very much of themselves,
  • The many precious animals we rescued and loved during these years,
  • The wonderful time I spent with my great-grandparents who lived next door growing up,
  • The feeling I felt when I first realized how very much God loved me and gave for me,
  • Christmas Eves with my family around my grandparents’ Christmas tree,
  • Christmas Day dinners with our whole family at my Aunt Janie’s home,
  • Falling in love with Phillip and marrying,
  • The beauty of my children when they were born,
  • My children, Tommy and Nicholas, and the amazing selfless love I felt for them,
  • Watching my children grow up and achieve so much,
  • Seeing my children happily married with wonderful children of their own,
  • The precious look on each of my grandchildren’s faces,
  • Working at a job where I feel so good about what I am doing each day,
  • My home I love so much,
  • My animal family I adore, and can hardly wait to see each night,
  • My precious ex-husband and dear friend Phillip, and the wonderful hugs and words he shares with me when I am down,
  • Enjoying the change of the seasons and the beautiful fall trees with Phillip,
  • Sharing my pain through this illness and injury with Phillip,
  • The precious pansies which greet me each morning on my way in the door at work,
  • The calls I get from my daughter-in-law and son in Texas, “Just to see how I am doing,”
  • The moments I treasure on the phone with my mother suffering from dementia,
  • The comfortable bed I crawl into each night,
  • The day and sunshine which greets me each day,
  • Just being alive. I came so close to not being alive today — so close,
  • Praise each day of your life and give thanks,
  • Place all these precious things in YOUR Secret Silver Box too.

Some of those things you hold so dear in your Secret Silver Box can actually hurt and break your heart, but this does not stop you from loving them even more. Some things just never change, not when you are a mother. No matter how much something or someone you love hurts you, you still love them and keep them in that Secret Silver Box forever — your heart.
